A Family Home We Couldn't Let Go
Yellow Mountain Vista has been a family mountain retreat since the home was built.
Families have grown up here. Children have become adults here. Friends and relatives return year after year because they have memories tied to this place — quiet mornings with coffee on the deck, evenings around the fire pit, wildlife wandering through the yard, and years of little moments that turned into core memories.
"We took over what had already been a beloved second home, and it became the same thing for us. Our kids grew up spending time here."
We are not ready to give up those memories or this home. But we cannot be here 365 days a year.
So when our family is not using Yellow Mountain Vista, we are opening it to guests — inviting you to come create your own memories here. The home is professionally supported by Dwell Escapes, who handles reservations and local guest support while we stay involved in the property's story and standards.
At 4,400 Feet, You're Above Most of the World's Light Pollution
Yellow Mountain Vista sits high on the mountain inside Nantahala National Forest near Yellow Mountain Fire Tower — not in a town, not in a valley, but perched between Cashiers, Highlands, and Lake Glenville.
Dark-Sky Stargazing
The night sky here is dramatically darker than what you'll see from cities or even lower elevations. On clear nights, the Milky Way stretches across the sky like spilled milk. Guests regularly comment that they've never seen stars this bright.
Above the Clouds
When conditions are right — especially after rain or during morning fog — you can watch clouds drift through the valleys below while you sit in sunshine. It's a perspective most people only see from airplanes.
Valley Fireworks
On Fourth of July and New Year's Eve, guests near Yellow Mountain sometimes look down toward fireworks happening in the communities below rather than looking up at them. It's an unforgettable vantage point.

Yellow Mountain Vista is a private family-owned mountain home perched above the clouds at 4,400 feet elevation inside Nantahala National Forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Located near Yellow Mountain Fire Tower between Cashiers, Lake Glenville, and Highlands, NC, this real family retreat is professionally supported by Dwell Escapes. The two-level cabin offers dark-sky stargazing, valley fireworks on holidays, a wraparound timber deck, wood-burning fireplace, wood-burning stove, and comfortable accommodations for up to 8 guests across 3 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. The downstairs level has a mini-split providing heat and air conditioning; the upstairs has electric heat and fans. Rates begin at $124 on select dates, with a typical base rate of $162.
The cabin is 12 minutes from Lake Glenville, 15 minutes from Cashiers, NC, and 20 minutes from Highlands, NC. Nearby attractions include Dry Falls (25 min), Whiteside Mountain (15 min), and Sapphire Valley Ski Resort (25 min). Mild days, roaring waterfalls, and trails lined with trillium and rhododendron. The cabin wakes up slowly — coffee on the deck, valley fog burning off below you.
Summer
June – August
Most days stay refreshingly cool at 4,400 ft, though late July and August can reach the mid-80s. The lower level has A/C; the upper level relies on mountain breezes. Lake Glenville is 12 minutes away. Fireworks light up the valley below on holidays.
Autumn
September – November
The Blue Ridge puts on its famous show. Book early — October is the most coveted month. Sweater weather, crackling fires, and golden ridgeline views from the wraparound deck.
Winter
December – February
Snow-dusted peaks, silent forests, and dark-sky stargazing from the deck. Ski at Sapphire Valley (25 min) or Cataloochee (75 min). The cabin is winterized — fireplace and wood stove keep nights warm and quiet.

We'd rather you pack the right bag than be surprised. Here's the real story on climate, comfort, and what each season actually feels like at 4,400 feet.
Upstairs / Main Level

The upstairs has electric heat but does not currently have air conditioning. Fans are provided, and at 4,400 feet mountain evenings are typically cooler. Late July and early August can occasionally reach the mid-80s during the day — but evenings almost always cool down into the 50s and 60s.
Downstairs / Lower Level
Queen bedroom, family lounge, laundry
The downstairs level has a mini-split providing both heat and air conditioning — especially welcome on those occasional warm August afternoons. The wood-burning stove also keeps this level cozy during fall and winter visits.

The short version: Most days are genuinely comfortable. If you visit in late July or August, expect a few warm afternoons — but you'll likely sleep with the windows open. The lower level A/C is there if you want it. We just want you to arrive prepared, not surprised.

Our mailing address says Cullowhee, NC — but don't let that mislead you. The post office and town of Cullowhee are roughly 40–45 minutes down the mountain.

You'll travel paved mountain roads with curves and elevation changes. The final approach is typical Blue Ridge mountain driving — scenic but winding.
All-wheel or four-wheel drive is not mandatory year-round, but it makes the drive more comfortable — especially in winter months or after heavy rain.
